WCAG 2.1 AA

Accessibility Statement

NonProfit Media is committed to ensuring our platform is accessible to everyone — including people with disabilities. Accountability journalism must be readable by all.

Last reviewed: April 23, 2026 · Standard: WCAG 2.1 Level AA

Our Commitment

NonProfit Media strives to conform to the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 Level AA. These guidelines explain how to make web content more accessible to people with disabilities, including visual, auditory, physical, speech, cognitive, language, learning, and neurological disabilities.

We believe that access to investigative journalism is a public right. We continuously audit and improve our platform to remove barriers and ensure that every reader — regardless of ability or assistive technology — can access our investigations, navigate our bureaus, and engage with our reporting.

Accessibility Features

Full Keyboard Navigation

Every interactive element — navigation menus, article links, search, forms, and modals — is fully operable via keyboard alone. Focus indicators are clearly visible on all interactive elements.

Screen Reader Support

Semantic HTML5 landmarks (nav, main, article, aside, footer) are used throughout. ARIA labels and roles are applied to complex widgets including the search modal, carousels, and tab panels.

Color Contrast

All text meets WCAG 2.1 AA contrast requirements: 4.5:1 for normal text and 3:1 for large text. Color is never used as the sole means of conveying information.

Touch & Mobile Accessibility

Touch targets meet the 44×44px minimum size requirement. The site is fully responsive and operable on mobile devices with assistive technologies including iOS VoiceOver and Android TalkBack.

Text Alternatives

All meaningful images include descriptive alt text. Decorative images use empty alt attributes. No content is conveyed through images of text.

Resizable Text

Text can be resized up to 200% without loss of content or functionality. The layout adapts gracefully to user font size preferences and browser zoom settings.

Known Limitations

Third-party embedded content: Some investigations link to or embed content from third-party sources (ProPublica, Reuters, AP, etc.). We cannot guarantee the accessibility of external sites or their embedded media players.

Legacy article images: A small number of historical investigation images sourced from third parties may have incomplete alt text. We are auditing and correcting these on an ongoing basis.

Breaking news carousel: The auto-rotating breaking news carousel on the homepage pauses on hover and focus. Users who prefer reduced motion can disable auto-rotation via their OS accessibility settings.

Continuous Improvement

Accessibility is not a one-time project — it is an ongoing commitment. We conduct accessibility audits with each major platform update, use automated testing tools (axe, Lighthouse) in our development workflow, and perform manual testing with assistive technologies before every release.

Our editorial team receives accessibility training annually. New features are reviewed against WCAG 2.1 AA criteria before deployment. We aim to address any reported accessibility barriers within 5 business days of receipt.

Report an Accessibility Barrier
