NonProfit Media is an independent nonprofit newsroom. We conduct original investigations, break stories that matter, and curate critical reporting from trusted sources — all in service of the public interest, funded by readers who believe accountability journalism is worth fighting for.
Investigative journalism — the kind that takes months, costs money, and makes powerful people uncomfortable — is disappearing from the American media landscape. Local newsrooms have collapsed. National outlets have consolidated under corporate ownership. The incentives of ad-supported media push toward speed, volume, and engagement, not depth, verification, and accountability.
The result is a democracy with less information about what its institutions are actually doing. Corruption goes unexposed. Systemic failures go undocumented. The people most harmed by the failures of government and corporate power are the least likely to have journalists covering their communities.
NonProfit Media exists to fill that gap. We are organized as a nonprofit specifically because the work we do is not commercially viable — and that is precisely why it needs to exist. We are funded by readers and foundations who believe the public has a right to know what power is doing in its name. We answer to them, and to no one else.

We spend weeks or months following evidence, filing FOIA requests, building sources, and analyzing data to expose wrongdoing and systemic failures that would otherwise go unreported. Our investigations are built on primary sources — documents, records, and people with direct knowledge.
We curate and contextualize critical investigations from trusted partner newsrooms — applying our editorial standards to every piece we publish. Curated reporting is clearly attributed and distinguished from our original work. We add analysis, context, and follow-up that helps readers understand what's at stake.
Our journalism doesn't stop at publication. We track outcomes — policy changes, legislative action, prosecutions, corporate accountability, and public awareness shifts. We publish an annual impact report. We follow up on investigations when new developments occur. Publication is the beginning, not the end.
Independence is not a value we aspire to — it is a structural commitment enforced by how we are organized, how we are funded, and what we refuse to accept. These are not policies that can be quietly waived. They are the architecture of our newsroom.
We are organized as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit. There are no shareholders, no profit motive, and no commercial pressure to soften findings or protect advertisers.
Donors have zero editorial authority. No funder reviews stories before publication, directs coverage areas, or influences which investigations we pursue. We have returned funding that came with strings.
We carry no advertising. We are not dependent on corporate ad revenue and have no incentive to protect the companies, industries, or institutions that advertise in other outlets.
We publish an annual transparency report disclosing all donors above $5,000, our full financials, and our editorial impact. Our funding sources are public. Our methodology is documented.
The majority of our operating budget comes from individual readers who believe in our mission. This is the most independent funding model in journalism — accountable to the public, not to institutions.
